How To Sup Up A Power Wheels

If you’ve ever owned a Power Wheels or a similar ride-on toy, you’ve likely noticed certain aspects that seemed intermediate in quality and could have used some upgrading. For instance, the tires, which are typically made from plastic, could have potentially offered better performance if they were manufactured from rubber. The battery, also, has maybe limited lifespan and quick to drain, could be replaced with a high-capacity, long-lasting variant to significantly enhance the toy’s performance and extend playtime.

This feeling depends on the person, as some people might be perfectly satisfied with the toy as it is, valuing simplicity and durability over high-end features. Others, however, might appreciate a more advanced, feature-rich ride-on toy. These enthusiasts might seek out customizable options, better materials, or technological enhancements !

All this said, we prepare this article in order to help parents who think that standard performance of the ride-on toy they own is just “not enough” and want to learn how to apply modifications to sup it up !

What parts of Ride-On Toys Can Be Modified ?

Various parts of a ride-on toy can be modified to enhance performance or aesthetics. I will go further to show every part that could be modified.

The most common part to upgrade is the battery as the toys come mostly with a 6-volt or 12-volt batteries. The modification consists in to replacing the battery with a higher voltage battery to increase the force of the ride-on toy.

The motor is another component that can be upgraded for better performance. A more powerful motor can provide higher speeds or improved abiliies of the vehicle such as climbing…

Tires are also modifiable. It could be by replacing the standard plastic tires with rubber ones or do some tricks to offer better traction, especially on slippery surfaces.

The gearbox, which translates the motor’s power into wheel movement, can be upgraded to improve efficiency and durability.

Lastly, for an extra touch of cool, you could install LED lights and some high-tech stuff for a more realistic and fun look.

On course many addititional modifications could be done such as : seats, belts, aesthetics …

Tools and Materials Needed

For this kind of DIY, you may need basic tools and materials, like a screwdriver set, a wrench set, and possibly a soldering iron if you plan on doing any electrical modifications.

Then, depending on the parts you will replace, materials could include a new higher voltage battery, a more powerful motor, rubber tires, a new gearbox, and the necessary wires and connectors.

How to upgrade Batteries :

To upgrade the battery, there is two solutions : Add a new one that comes to reinforce the performance of the old one or completely replace the battery by a new high performance one.

This is how we replace a Battery:

  1. Buy a new battery, an adapter, and a safe Amp wire harness connector.
  2. Test the new battery with a multimeter to ensure it is fully charged and functional, charge if not.
  3. Disconnect the connectors from the old battery. At the same time color code the connectors
  4. Attach the connectors from the old battery to the new battery, ensuring you match the color coding.
  5. Connect the new battery directly to the toy for a test run.
  6. Note any increase in speed or performance.

This is how we add a new battery:

It’s the standard process to connect batteries in series :

  1. Prepare a new Battery and a 30 amp circuit braker
  2. Remove the old battery from the Power Wheels.
  3. Connect the Batteries: Attach a jumper wire from the negative terminal of one battery to the positive terminal of the other.
  4. Install the Circuit Breaker for overload protection.
  5. Insert the Batteries in their positions
  6. Wire the Batteries to the Power Wheels: Connect the positive jumper wire (red) from the Power Wheels (white wire) to the positive terminal of the unconnected battery. Then, connect the negative (black) jumper wire to the negative terminal of the other battery.

Important to note that the batteries should be similar.

How to upgrade The Motor :

Here we need to install a High Power Motor :

  1. Purchase / prepare a 775 Upgraded Motor along with heat sinks for extra durability.
  2. Dismantle the power wheels by removing all plastic components such as wheels, axle, seat and any plastic covers that inhibit access to the gearboxes and wiring harness.
  3. Prepare the Motor: start by installing the gear teeth onto the new motors using a wrench and attach the heat sinks
  4. Mount the motor and ensure the wires are properly in place.
  5. Reassemble the power wheels.
  6. Run the new motor for 25 minutes on low power to break them in. Use a method to hold the pedal down or put a switch in place to keep it running.

How to upgrade The Tires :

There is plenty of methods to upgrade the tires, but the best method is to change completely the tires to rubber ones. This is what we will detail in the below process :

  1. Gather your tools and materials: You’ll need a flathead screwdriver, a drill, the replacement tires, and a pair of retaining clips
  2. Remove the wheel caps using the screwdriver, carefully pry off the caps on the wheels. Have your helper hold onto these caps.
  3. Remove the retaining clip, it’s inside each wheel. Pull this out. The entire tire should come off easily once the clip is removed.
  4. Remove the screws from the wheel with the screwdriver.
  5. Separate the old tire from the wheel: Once the screws are removed, you can pull off the old tire. It should be attached to a plastic rim.
  6. Insert the new tire click it that the rotation of the new tire is correct before inserting the plastic rim back into it.
  7. Reattach the plastic rim: Once the new tire is in place, reattach the plastic rim using the two screws you removed earlier. Make sure that the screw holes in the plastic rim align with the screw holes in the wheel.
  8. Attach the new wheel onto the vehicle Using the retaining clip, reattach the wheel onto the vehicle. Make sure that it’s secure and won’t come off during use.
  9. Repeat for the remaining wheels
